U.S. CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION CALLS ON THE PRESIDENT
A bipartisan U.S. Congressional delegation, comprising Senator Evan Bayh, Senator Hillary Clinton and Congressman John McHugh called on President General Pervez Musharraf at the Army House, Lahore , this evening. During the meeting, discussions were held on Pakistan-U.S. relations and regional issues of common interest.
President Musharraf underlined the importance of the strategic relationship between Pakistan and the United States and expressed satisfaction at the deepening of cooperation in diverse fields. The President underscored the need for expanded trade and economic and investment ties between the two countries. The President emphasized the significance of greater market access to create economic opportunities as well as initiatives like Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) and U.S. assistance for the FATA Sustainable Development Plan. President Musharraf further highlighted the importance of strong defence ties between Pakistan and the U.S.
The President reaffirmed Pakistan 's firm resolve to fight extremism and terrorism. In this context, he highlighted the holistic approach being followed by Pakistan .
The members of the Congressional delegation underlined the importance the U.S. attached to Pakistan as a strategic friend and ally. The delegation reiterated U.S. support for closer bilateral cooperation in different fields. The members of the delegation commended Pakistan 's vital contribution in fighting extremism and terrorism.
The President stressed that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan was in Pakistan 's vital interest. The President informed the Congressional delegation on measures taken by Pakistan to strengthen security along the border. The President underlined that security along the border was a joint responsibility -- emphasizing that all sides must enhance coordination to promote security and stability. The delegation appreciated Pakistan 's contribution to the peace and stabilization process in Afghanistan .
The President also briefed the Congressional delegation on the Pakistan-India peace process and efforts for the resolution of all outstanding issues, including Jammu and Kashmir . The President underlined the need for dispute resolution and stressed that the historic opportunity before the two countries to resolve Kashmir must be seized. The international community, including the U.S. , could support Pakistan 's efforts to promote durable peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Khurshid M. Kasuri and the U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Mr. Ryan C. Crocker were also present.
