MR. JACK STRAW CALLS ON THE FOREIGN MINISTER

 

British Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor Rt Hon Jack Straw, who is currently visiting Islamabad in connection with promoting bilateral cooperation pertaining to the legal matters, called on Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi today.  He had earlier called on the Prime Minister and other political leaders.

Mr. Straw in his long and illustrious political career has held various positions in the British Government including the portfolio of Foreign Secretary.  During their meeting the two Ministers reviewed bilateral relations, discussed situation in Afghanistan and counter-terrorism strategy, composite dialogue with India, relations with other neighbours and Government of Pakistan’s priorities.

The Foreign Minister appreciated British Government’s outright support to the democratic process in Pakistan, and doubling of the developmnet assistance to Pound 480 million in the social sector. 

The Foreign Minister apprised the visiting dignitary about the multi-pronged strategy being pursued by the government to fight extremism and terrorism. The Foreign Minister said that violation of Pakistan’s territory is counter- productive and extremely unhelpful in our efforts towards tackling militants.

Mr. Straw agreed that the two countries have an abiding interest in augmenting bilateral relations. He acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive role and sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, contribution in the efforts towards bringing stability to Afghanistan, supporting Afghan refugees and promoting peace in the region. He recognized the need for respecting Pakistan’s territorial sovereignty and extending support to strengthen the new democratic government.
