FOREIGN MINISTER RECEIVES AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER
Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi received the Australian High Commissioner Mr. Tim George at the Foreign Office today. During the introductory call, bilateral, regional and international issues of common interest were discussed.
Welcoming the High Commissioner, the Foreign Minister expressed satisfaction over friendly relations between the two countries and said that Pakistan was keen to further develop these ties.
Foreign Minister Qureshi highlighted the progress made by Pakistan in its efforts against extremists in Swat and Malakand and thanked the High Commissioner for support extended to Pakistan by Australia. The Foreign Minister emphasized that while security operation in Swat has almost been concluded successfully, it was essential that the dislocated people were provided adequate relief assistance so that they returned back to their homes, in safety.
The High Commissioner lauded Pakistan’s contribution to the fight against terrorism and militancy and said that Pakistan’s role was important not only for peace of South Asia but also for global peace. Referring to economic ties, the High Commissioner said that Pakistan’s unique geographic position enables her to play as a hub for regional economic cooperation and connectivity. Australia would explore mutually beneficial opportunities to work with Pakistan in viable projects. Both sides also discussed cooperation in agriculture, education, mining and energy fields. The Foreign Minister said that these areas offered good opportunities for Australian private sector.
The High Commissioner expressed his resolve to work for further deepening of mutually beneficial ties between Pakistan and Australia. The Foreign Minster expressed his and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ support to the High Commissioner in his endavours to this end and wished him success.
