OPENING STATEMENT BY THE FOREIGN MINISTER AT THE JOINT PRESS STAKEOUT WITH THE AUSTRALIAN FOREIGN MINISTER (16 FEBRUARY 2009)

We are delighted to receive the Honourable Foreign Minister of Australia, Mr. Stephen Smith, who is on an official visit to Pakistan , upon my invitation. He will be calling on the Prime Minister and President tomorrow.

Pakistan values its relations with Australia which are characterized by cordiality and friendship. Pakistan desires to further deepen and broaden these ties through consistent engagement at the highest level and by adding substance to them through increased trade and investment. We have noted that the initiation of Defence Strategic Dialogue, Annual Bilateral Consultations between the two Foreign Offices as well as the formation of Joint Trade Committee would auger well for our bilateral relations.

This evening we had fruitful exchange of views covering the whole gamut of our bilateral relations, regional and international issues of mutual interest. We expressed satisfaction at the momentum generated over the last few years in building close ties.

It is also gratifying to note that the two way bilateral trade, (Australian $ 650 million approximately) though far below its existing potential, has increased. Australian companies have a significant presence in Pakistan and they are doing good business. With the new democratic Government in place, I am confident that our cooperation in economic and commercial areas will receive further boost. We are thankful to Australia for its development assistance. We are also happy that Australia has associated itself with the Friends of Democratic Pakistan Forum.

I took this opportunity to brief Mr. Stephen Smith on the internal situation in Pakistan especially the new Government's agenda and vision for the country for which the Honourable Foreign Minister expressed his Government's strong support. Within the context of bilateral trade, I made a case for enhanced market access for Pakistan which would enable us to generate more employment opportunities and root out poverty and extremism.

We also held detailed deliberations on regional and international issues including the situation in Afghanistan , the constructive and positive steps taken by the Government of Pakistan in the aftermath of Mumbai terrorist attacks and counter terrorism. Both of us agreed that a peaceful regional environment is essential for all States of South Asia to realize their true potential.

The Honourable Foreign Minister conveyed his Government's deep appreciation for Pakistan 's consistent role in the fight against terror and efforts for regional peace and stability. He also praised our helping hand in Afghanistan 's reconstruction and development. I also reiterated that the war against terror could not be won by military means alone and that a multi-pronged strategy was required to root out the causes of terrorism and win the hearts and minds of the people.

Australia recognizes that Pakistan is playing a pivotal role in the region and its security, stability and prosperity is vital for regional and international peace and security. Our efforts in addressing the challengers of extremism and terrorism and to promote national economic development require the support of the international community. We appreciate the understanding and support shown by Australia to our endeavours.

I am confident that our fruitful discussions today would further solidify our partnership in promoting regional and global peace and security and for mutually beneficial economic collaboration. Thank You.
