5TH ROUND OF THE PAKISTAN-RUSSIA CONSULTATIVE GROUP ON STRATEGIC STABILITY HELD IN MOSCOW

The 5th Round of the Pakistan-Russia Consultative Group on Strategic Stability was held in Moscow, on 29 June 2009. The Pakistan delegation was led by Additional Foreign Secretary, Haroon Shaukat and the Russian delegation by Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Sergei Ryabkov.

The two sides agreed to work closely to move forward on the vision of bilateral relations given by President Medvedev and President Zardari in their meeting at Yekaterinburg, earlier in June. President Medvedev’s announcement to start “a new chapter in Pakistan-Russia relations” was particularly noted as guideline for substantive work in all areas of bilateral cooperation.

Ambassador Sergei Ryabkov reiterated the importance of support by the international community for Pakistan’s efforts to eliminate terrorism, extremism and militancy and recognition of the sacrifices made by the people of Pakistan in this regard.

Issues of interest to both delegations were discussed in detail including cooperation in multilateral fora.

The two sides agreed to meet regularly to continue this consultative process and for concrete cooperation.
