UN COMMISSION CALLS ON THE FOREIGN MINISTER

 

The three-member UN Commission to probe into the assassination of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto called on Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi today. The Commission is chaired by Ambassador Heraldo Munoz of Chile.  Other two members are Mr. Marzuki Darusman of Indonesia and Mr. Peter Fitzgerald of Ireland. This is the first visit of the Commission to Pakistan.

Welcoming the Commission, the Foreign Minister thanked the Chairman and members of the Commission for accepting the onerous responsibility which demonstrated their affection for Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. 

The Foreign Minister expressed the hope that the Commission will be able to complete their mission within the stipulated timeframe. In this regard, he assured the Commission of full support of the Government of Pakistan. He added that not only the Pakistan People’s Party but the entire nation eagerly wanted to know the facts and circumstances of the assassination of their beloved leader.

Ambassador Heraldo Munoz said the Commission is aware of the sentiments of the people and the Government of Pakistan.  He said Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto was a great leader and in her assassination not only Pakistan but the entire world lost a stateperson of vision with full commitment to democracy and peace.  Ambassador Munoz said the Commission will carry out the task given to it in a professional manner and that it would be their endeavour to compile their findings and report within six months.

Ambassador Munoz also thanked the Government of Pakistan for making excellent arrangements for the Commission’s work.
