FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS GCC AMBASSADORS

Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi held a meeting with the Heads of Diplomatic Missions of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates and Oman) in Islamabad today.

The Foreign Minister briefed the Ambassadors on the ongoing Swat operation and how the Government with the support of the people of Pakistan and the international community, was trying to provide adequate relief assistance to the dislocated population.  He said the law enforcement operation was proceeding successfully and that the Government was determined to take the security operation to its logical conclusion.  He emphasized that the Democratic Government of Pakistan was able to build a national consensus against the militants and violent extremists.  The people of Pakistan were fully behind the Government’s efforts against the miscreants.

On situation regarding the dislocated population, the Foreign Minister said the Government of Pakistan was sparing no effort to look after its own people and provide them all the requisite assistance, including food, water, medical facilities, education and electricity.  The Foreign Minister emphasized that it was important that the international community expedited their response to the UN appeal, enabling UN agencies to continue their relief operation without any disruption.

The Heads of Diplomatic Missions of GCC countries assured the Foreign Minister that their respective countries stood shoulder to shoulder with Pakistan and would provide all possible help to the dislocated people.  They also expressed full support to the Government in the fight against terrorism and militancy.
