Defence Day

(2017-09-20) A reception to commemorate the 52nd Anniversary of the Defence Day (06 September 1965) was held at the Embassy today. General Claudio Graziano, Chief of Staff of Italy was the chief guest on the occasion.

The band of Army Regiment Granatieri Di Sardegna played the national anthems of Pakistan and Italy. The Defence Attache highlighted the importance of the Defence Day. A documentary on the armed forces of Pakistan titled "Defenders" was also screened.

General Graziano spoke about the close ties between Pakistan and Italy and stated that these ties will further grow in future for mutual benefits. He termed terrorism, the enemy of mankind and spoke about the various conflicts in the region, Middle East and Africa which had fallout affects.

Ambassador Riyaz called Italy a true friend of Pakistan and stated that ties between the two countries had expanded in diverse areas of cooperation. He spoke on the need of having peace in the region and settlement of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions.

The Ambassador paid rich tribute to the martyrs who had laid down their lives defence of Pakistan. He stated that Pakistan had suffered tremendous material and human losses in the fight against terrorism. However, due to the gallantry of the armed forces, the country was close to eradicating this menace from its soil. He further said that terrorism has no religion and no boundaries and concerted efforts from all countries are required to deal with this issue. He also reflected on the need to address the root causes of terrorism.

The chief guest and the Ambassador cut the cake after which the guests enjoyed traditional Pakistani cuisine.

The event was attended by over 200 guests including diplomats, senior government officials, defence attaches, journalists and politicians.
