Ambassador Zehra Akbari Welcoming the President and members of Pakistan and Portugal Parliamentary Friendship Group at the Pakistan House

(2016-11-16) Welcoming the President and members of Pakistan and Portugal Parliamentary Friendship Group at the Pakistan House, Ambassador Zehra Akbari expressed satisfaction at the presence of friendship groups in both the Parliaments. She informed them that the Friendship Group for Portugal in the National Assembly of Pakistan, was headed by Honourable Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. She said, existence of the Friendship Group was a manifestation of good will and cooperation between the two countries. She lauded the Friendship group under the leadership of President Cristovao Crespo, which she said was proactive in promoting contacts between Pakistan and Portugal.

Speaking about Pakistan, the Ambassador said, unlike Portugal, Pakistan is fairly a young country. It came into being in 1947, but had much older history which goes back to the Indus Valley civilization that existed around river Indus about 5000 years ago. The people who lived in areas now called Pakistan were trading with Mesopotamia and Egypt. She also mentioned traces of Portuguese foot-prints in towns and cities of Pakistan and emphasized that there were remnants of Portuguese presence even today along the coast in Baluchistan.

Pakistan and Portugal established diplomatic relations and both set up their Embassies in Lisbon and Karachi in the early 1950s. The cordiality and mutual goodwill continues and the relations were growing from strength to strength. She expressed the confidence that Parliamentary Friendship Group will further reinforce bilateral ties that happily exist between the two countries.

President of the group, Hon. Cristovao Crespo expressed satisfaction at the progress of the group.
