4th Round of Pakistan-Germany Strategic Dialogue in Islamabad

(2018-11-01) The 4th Round of Pakistan-Germany Strategic Dialogue was held in Islamabad today. The Pakistan side was led by Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua, while the German delegation was headed by State Secretary Walter Lindner, Federal Foreign Office.

The two sides reviewed the spectrum of bilateral relations and identified opportunities and possibilities for further cooperation, especially in the spheres of political, trade and investment, education, culture, media, parliamentary exchanges and people-to-people contacts. The Foreign Secretary provided an overview of progress made by Pakistan in strengthening democracy, political stability and improved law and order situation in the country. The achievements in the fight against terrorism and implementation of National Action Plan were also highlighted.

The Foreign Secretary briefed on the reform agenda and priorities of the new government and invited German companies to invest in hydel-power generation, renewable energy, automobile and agriculture sectors.

The two sides exchanged views on important global and regional issues of mutual interest. The Foreign Secretary briefed on foreign policy priorities of the country in the region, particularly efforts to facilitate an intra-Afghan process of political reconciliation. The German side appreciated Pakistan's positive role in peace efforts in Afghanistan.

The German side highlighted challenges confronting Germany and the European Union, including migration.

The German side was apprised of recent developments in the South Asian region, especially in Pakistan-India relations and human rights violations in the Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The German side briefed on the EU, Brexit and relations with neighbours.

The next round of Strategic Dialogue will be held in Berlin in 2019.
